He is IFC President and member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and was recently named a 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholar. In his first year at UGA, Emilio worked with Fikri Avci, studying new vaccine targets for Streptococcus pneumoniae In the Terns lab, Emilio is studying the structure and function of Type IV CRISPR-Cas systems Matthew Li Matthew is majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minoring in Spanish. Matthew is a Foundation Fellow from Buffalo Grove, IL and competes for the UGA Model UN team and writes for Georgia Political Review when he is not in the lab. In the Terns lab, Matthew has helped develop CRISPR as a genetic toolkit for hyperthermophilic Archaea, and used this toolkit to identify Anti-CRISPR proteins in plasmids. Hanna Elgarhi Hanna is majoring in Genetics at UGA. Before joining the Terns lab, Hanna worked with Prof. Andrea Sweigart studying phenotypic expression of Mimulus guttatus wildflowers. Hanna is currently investigating the contribution of three different nuclease activities to Type III-A CRISPR immunity in Streptococcus thermophilus.
